So, one of the poems in ‘The Actual’ is called ‘Fuck / Beethoven’ and BBC Radio 3 invited me to contribute to a series of essays about him. I wrote about my earliest musical memories in Nigeria, hip hop, dance, theatre, and the various twists and turns that led me to lifting a middle finger loftily at Ludwig Van Beethoven.
He is a towering figure in classical music, beloved by the musical profession, and other contributors are Sophie Stone, Thangam Debbonnaire, Professor Andrew Biswell and Nitin Sawhney. Each essayist offers a uniquely personal insight into the scope of Beethoven’s work, and mine will be broadcast on Mon 21 Sep 2020 at 22:45 on BBC Radio 3. Tune in, or listen afterwards online here.
