The third event is one of my faves - Poetry + Film / Hack - which presents both art-forms in collaboration, by adding live poetry readings to the viewing experience of magnificent films. Movies are chosen for their social, political or cultural resonance and by including poetry in their presentation, we expand, deepen or highlight their themes. The end of the film is just the beginning.
To date, there have been over 10 films, over 60 poets and Vjs bringing this event to audiences, and I am bringing one of my favourite films to you - The sequel to Sister Act! This cult classic 1992 film co-starring Lauryn Hill, sees Whoopi Goldberg reprising her role as Deloris van Cartier, as she finds herself coming to the aid of her nun friends who need her help to save her old school. We will screen the films, and after that the finest poets will read their newly commissioned poems about the film.
The lineup includes: Nikita Gill, Gboyega Odubanjo*, Cecilia Knapp, Richard Scott, Tatenda Naomi Matsvai with Zainab Amina as VJ and I as host.
As you may have heard that Gboyega Odubanjo, most tragically passed away last week. He was a phenomenal voice, a good man, a favourite writer of mine, and was to be a part of this line up. I can’t bring myself to take his name from the lineup, so I won’t. This event will also be a celebration of his work, and I hope you will come to hold a moment’s silence for him and listen to some of his poems. A foundation has been set up in his name. You can donate to its fundraiser here and we are pretty close to hitting the target.
