P+F/H has a very simple premise - we add live poetry readings to the viewing experience of magnificent films. This is our 7th event and oooh boy, we have selected quite a film - BABYLON. After is premiere at Cannes in 1980, the movie was never released; folks thought it would incite racial tensions. Raw, smouldering and shot 5 minutes away from The Albany, it follows a young dancehall Dj, Blue, as he pursues his musical ambitions, battling against the xenophobia of employers, neighbours, police, and the National Front. With beautifully smoky cinematography, BABYLON is fearless and unsentimental, yet tempered by the hazy bliss of the dancehall set to a blistering reggae and lovers rock soundtrack featuring Aswad, Johnny Clarke, Dennis Bovell, and more.
Given the subject matter, it felt important to have an all Jamaican line-up of poets responding to the film, and we found some of the best working in the country today. Award winning authors, editors, performers, lecturers and curators, we have: Courtney Conrad, Keith Jarrett, Karen McCarthy Woolf, Kirk-Ann Roberts, and malakaï sargeant, with our in-house Vj Zainab Amina supporting on projection. It’s gonna be incredible.
